A vacuum pump generates negative pressure between the plate and the workpiece; atmospheric pressure presses the workpiece onto the support surface over its full area.

How does a vacuum chuck work?

The area beneath the workpiece is sealed by gaskets or a porous suction surface. The holding force results from the negative pressure achieved multiplied by the effective suction area — the larger the sealed area, the higher the holding force.

When is vacuum clamping the right choice?

Especially for thin workpieces that are prone to bending or for sensitive surfaces: the force is applied over a large area, the workpiece hardly distorts, and the entire top side remains freely accessible. Typical materials are aluminum, plastics, glass, and other non-magnetic materials.

Limitations and requirements

The workpiece must rest on the support sufficiently flat and with an adequate seal. Porous or highly permeable workpieces require special suction plates or aids. The holding force is limited by the negative pressure and the area — this must be taken into account when machining forces are high.

Vacuum clamping uses negative pressure to hold workpieces over a large area — low-distortion, gentle, and ideal for thin, non-magnetic parts.
